CAIRO, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian security bodies discovered Tuesday 500 kg of highly explosive substances in the central part of the Sinai Peninsula, the official news agency MENA reported.

Egyptian police had received tips about the existence of huge amounts of explosives in central Sinai, which police said were to be smuggled through Egypt's international borders with the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

Security forces moved to the suspected place and carried out inspection which resulted in finding a number of plastic bags including 500 kg of TNT -- the highly explosive material, said MENA.

Huge amounts of TNT were found in the last two months in different areas in Sinai, said the report.

Security bodies said those explosive substances belong to some gangs which were getting ready to sell them to some Palestinians.
