BEIJING, Dec. 6 -- A baby weighing less than two kilograms from a Taiwan family has arrived in Shanghai to receive medical treatment for her congenital heart disease.

A report published on Tianjin news website enorth.com says the baby was born at a hospital in Tianjin, a northern municipality near Beijing where the baby's grandfather, Ye Tianxun from Taiwan, has lived for 19 years.

A doctor at the pediatric office of the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University says an air journey of such an underweight newborn is unprecedented. In order to ensure safe and comfortable air travel, the hospital made a careful plan that has taken each negative factor into consideration, including the duration of the batteries used in the incubator and an infusion pump syringe.

Other factors, such as the impact of an airplane's jolts on the baby's circulatory system and heart performance, were also considered. Three doctors were dispatched from the hospital to watch over the baby, who also suffers from breathing difficulties.

Air China also accommodated the family by fixing the baby's incubator to the cabin. China's national aviation carrier also sent its staff to Beijing to take a specially-made stand to maintain the stability of incubator on the plane.

The baby is scheduled to receive a medical operation on Dec. 14 or 15 at Shanghai Children's Medical Center, noted for its professionalism in treating light-weight babies with congenital heart defects. It is rare in China to place a less than two-kilogram baby under an operation designed to eradicate congenital heart disease.

Ye Tianxun and his family also donated an incubator for carrying seriously ill babies as a present to express gratitude to the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University.

Sources say Taiwan people living and working in Tianjin have donated 2.82 million yuan to the city's social welfare activities so far this year under the leadership of the Tianjin Association of Taiwan-Invested Enterprises.
