TOKYO, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Neither
a Japanese tanker or a U.S.
nuclear-powered submarine developed an oil or radiation leak after a collision in the
Persian Gulf early Tuesday (Japan Time), Kyodo News reported.
The 299,999-ton tanker Mogamigawa operated by Kawasaki
Kisen Kaisha Ltd. collided with the 6,300-ton attack submarine Newport News
under the command of the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet headquartered in Bahrain at
around 4:15 a.m. near the Strait of Hormuz, Japanese foreign ministry sources
were quoted as saying.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry received the report
early in the morning.
Nobody was injured in the collision but the sub's bow and the
tanker's stern may have collided, Kyodo said.
