BEIJING, Feb. 2 -- Officials in Iran have
slammed remarks made by French President Jacques Chirac saying it won't help
the tense situation in the region.
Chirac downplayed on Monday, any danger from Iran
having just one or two nuclear weapons.
But a spokesman at the Iranian Foreign Ministry has
condemned what he considers an irresponsible remark which, he says, suggests
Tehran aims to develop nuclear weapons. He's rejected the implication outright
claiming that engaging in nuclear warfare goes against the country's religious
beliefs.
The spokesman says he hopes world leaders will be
more prudent when making such statements in the future.
