JAKARTA, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- The governor of Indonesia's capital city Jakarta, Sutiyoso, declared Friday that Jakarta was in the third alert situation after most parts of the city were flooded.
"All places are in the third alert situation except West Jakarta area like Angke where the respective administration declares that it is in the first alert situation as it has been inundated by 3-meter waters," the Antara news agency quoted the governor as saying.
Sutiyoso said his office has deployed 80 mobile water pumps to reduce the level of flood water in 78 flood-prone areas in Jakarta.
Floods caused by continuing rains in the past several days not only inundated Jakarta but also its vicinity areas like Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi on Friday.
Water level in Pondok Aren area in Bintaro sub district, Tangerang district, reached 2.5 meters.
At least 10 residential complexes were flooded by 1.6 m-high waters in Ciledug area, Tangerang, causing long traffic jam in the area.
Floods also inundated luxurious Jababeka residential complex in Bekasi, leaving many vehicles half submerged by one-meter flood.
Meanwhile, the secretary the Jakarta city administration's flood management implementation coordinating unit, Haryanto Bajuri, denied that the current floods was a cycle of floods in five years.
He said his office dispatched 14,500 personnel to help evacuate people from their flooded homes to safer grounds.
Reports said the current floods were the worst ever since 2002 when many parts in Jakarta and its vicinity were also inundated by floods.
