Two Romanians arrested in Iraq released

    BUCHAREST, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- U.S. military authorities in Iraq decided on Friday to release the two Romanian citizens arrested on Oct. 31, 2006 for filming in a U.S. military base, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Friday.

    U.S. military authorities made the decision convinced that the two Romanians did not act in bad faith, according to the release.

    Adrian Gancean and Nelu Ilie were entrusted to officials of the Romanian Embassy in Baghdad on Friday. The two are currently at the Embassy, with the formalities to send them back to their country begun, the source also said.

    The release of the two was the result of both the insistence of the Romanian Embassy in Iraq and of the evolution of the investigation into the nature of the actual deeds committed.

    The Romanian Ministry for Foreign Affairs kept in touch with the families of the two and gave them the good news of the release.
