JAKARTA, Feb. 2, (Xinhua) -- Floods inundated many areas in Indonesia's capital Jakarta Friday, halting the daily activities of its citizens.

Floods blocked roads and railways in the city, making people difficult to get to work or school. The main road from Jl. Sudirman to Kota Station, the unusually busiest road in Jakarta, seemed empty Friday.

Dozens of trains from Kota to neighboring cities such as Bekasiand Depok could not be expected to depart on time due to disruption by the floods.

Among the areas hit by the floods were Kampung Melayu, Jatinegara, Cipinang, Tomang, Kelapa Gading, Petamburan, Bendungan Hilir, West Cilandak, Cipete and Tebet.

To help flood victims, the Indonesian military (TNI) on Friday deployed 1,729 of its personnel with 25 rubber boats, 40 rafts and60 trucks to flood-hit areas in Jakarta and environs.

The vast floods in Jakarta have a five-year cycle with the last floods happening in 2002.
