PARIS, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A total of 58 nations on
Tuesday promised to take measures to stop the recruitment of child soldiers in a
document called "Paris Commitments" published following a two-day conference,
"Let us liberate the children of war."
The countries signing the
"Commitments" pledged to take efforts to "end the illegal utilization and
recruitment of children by the armed groups or forces all over the world" and to
spread out all their strength to respect and apply the texts.
The "Commitments" also stressed the unconditional and
immediate liberation of the underage recruited or utilized by armed groups or
forces and the disposal of all financial measures as soon as possible in order
to protect the children.
The conference is sponsored by the United Nations
Children's Fund (UNICEF) and French Foreign Ministry, with representatives from
around 60 countries and international organizations.
The number of children recruited or being used by
armed groups and forces is estimated at 250,000 to date and 12 countries have
been blacklisted by the UN over the matter.
