U.S. calls for inclusive reconciliation conference in Somalia

    NAIROBI, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The United States top diplomat for Africa on Saturday urged the transitional government of Somalia to make the upcoming reconciliation conference inclusive and chart out ways to stabilize the Horn of Africa nation.

    Addressing Somali lawmakers in Baidoa, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer who arrived early Saturday on an unannounced visit to the nation held talks with the country's president and prime minister and pledged Washington's supports towards the reconciliation talks set for April 16.

    "The international contact group on Somalia is supporting the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia to restore peace and security," Frazer told the parliament, according to Awad Ashara, a Somali lawmaker.

    Frazer is the highest-ranking Washington official to visit war-torn Somalia since 1994. She arrived in the town of Baidoa, seat of the country 's parliament, 250 km northwest of the capital Mogadishu, on early Saturday.
