Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Four bomb blasts and a rocket attack on Sunday killed at least 21 people in Iraq, including 35 citizens, one policeman, Xinhua reported.

A roadside bomb went off on Sunday morning near a police patrol in Baghdad's northern district of Adhamiyah, killing a policeman and wounding seven others, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Another roadside bomb detonated near a police commando patrol in Hilla City, some 100 km south of Baghdad, wounding three commando members, said a local police.

A suicide car bomb struck a popular market in a southern Baghdad district on Sunday, killing five people and wounding 20 others, an Interior Ministry source said.

"A suicide bomber blew up an explosive-laden car near a popular market in the Eilam district detonated around midday," said the source.

Earlier, the source said rockets struck a residential building in Mahmoudiyah town, some 30 km south of Baghdad, killing 15 people and wounding up to 30 others. However, AP said the explosion was a pickup truck bombs with artillery shells.

First police reports put the toll at 15 killed and 25 wounded. The rockets badly damaged a residential building and destroyed nearby shops, he said, adding that women and children were among the victims.

U.S. and Iraqi security forces rushed to the area, while ambulances continue evacuating the victims.

Separately, the U.S. military Sunday announced that four American soldiers were killed Saturday in an explosion near their vehicle in Diyala province northeast of Baghdad.

The names of the soldiers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.

More than 3,270 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
