NEW DELHI, May 3 (Xinhua) -- In a high-voltage drama, a man going through a troubled marriage shot himself outside Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's high-security residence here, triggering panic for sometime, New Delhi Television (NDTV) reported here.

Kishori Lal, a resident of southwest Delhi, was rushed to hospital with a bullet injury on the right side of his chest afterhis unsuccessful suicide bid.

According to NDTV, Lal later told police that he was troubled over his "wife's illicit relationship" and had chosen the spot for committing suicide to attract maximum publicity.

A case of attempt to suicide would be registered against him.

Lal reached the area in a car and parked it outside the Jaipur Polo grounds, across the road from Prime Minister's 7, Race Course residence, before opening fire at himself.

Reports of gunshots being heard in the high-security area sparked tension and senior police officials rushed to the spot in no time.

Initially, it was suspected that somebody opened fire at Lal and fled the scene, but it later became clear that it was a suicide attempt.

This is not the first time somebody has attempted suicide outside the Prime Minister's residence. A man had faked self-immolation outside the PM's house on Jan. 26, 2006.

Police found the injured man and a Maruti Zen car with some cash and a pistol in it at the scene of the crime.
