กกSpecial report: Tension escalates in Iraq

MOSCOW, May 7 (Xinhua) -- A Russian journalist has been killed in Iraq in a bomb attack on the U.S. convoy with which he was traveling, the Itar-Tass news agency reported Monday.

Russian Ambassador to Iraq Vladimir Chamov confirmed the death of Dmitry Chebotayev, who was working as a photographer for the U.S. WTN agency. He was also a freelancer contributing to Russian media such as the Moscow-based PhotoX Press agency.

The victim was reportedly accompanied by six U.S. soldiers, who were also killed in the attack Sunday in the province of Diyala, northeast of Baghdad.

Chebotayev, who had covered stories in many countries, had been in Iraq for over two months and was planning to go back to Moscow later this month, Itar-Tass said, citing e-mails he had exchanged with friends.
