KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) on Tuesday said it will ask organizers of the proposed Manchester United tour to cancel its match in Malaysia this July.
"Manchester United can not come to Malaysia in July as we have to abide by the AFC's request (the Asian Football Confederation),"FAM Deputy President Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah told reporters here.
Tengku Abdullah made the remarks during the 22nd AFC Congress in response to the anger of AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam and the strong call of FIFA President Sepp Blatter (the International Federation of Football Association).
As Manchester United's scheduled tour of Asia coincides with the AFC Asian Cup from July 7 to July 29, it is likely to steal the spotlight of the Asian tournament.
Earlier, Bin Hammam condemned the proposed tour as "immoral and unethical", saying Manchester United disrespected the football game in Asia, according to local media reports.
Blatter also called the English Premier League champion to reschedule its Asian tour as the timing for July is not suitable.
The Manchester United had planed tour to Japan, South Korea, Macao of China and Malaysia. Its match in Kuala Lumpur was slated for July 27, just two days before the Asian Cup final in Jakarta.
