WASHINGTON, May 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George
W. Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had a telephone discussion on
Thursday and discussed bilateral and international issues, White House spokesman
Tony Snow said.
"They discussed Secretary (Condoleezza) Rice's
upcoming visit to Moscow, as well as a range of important bilateral and
international issues. And they talked about plans for next month's G8 summit in
Germany," Snow said.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will visit
Russia next week for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the
U.S. plan to deploy missile defense system in East Europe.
The United States has claimed the missile defense
system is aimed against states and groups in the Middle East that are seeking
weapons of mass destruction, not against Russia.
The United States plans to base missile interceptors
in Poland and radar units in the Czech Republic as part of a project to extend
the missile defense system to Europe. Russia has voiced opposition to the plan.
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates visited Moscow
last month to try to persuade Russia to accept the missile defense system.
However, the visit failed to assuage Russian opposition to the U.S. plan.

are "difficult" in some areas.
"On many things we have done very well, but the fact
is that on some others it's been a difficult period," Rice said while testifying

MOSCOW, May 8 (Xinhua) -- United State Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will strive to sell U.S. plans to deploy anti-missile systems in central Europe during her visit to Moscow next week, which has sparked rows between the Cold War rivals, news agencies said on Tuesday.
During the visit slated for May 14-15, the top U.S. diplomat will
discuss with her Russian colleagues on a wide range of bilateral and global
