WELLINGTON, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Former French Polynesia President Gaston
Tong Sang's party, the To Tatou Ai'a, has won 27 of the 57 seats in Sunday's
legislative assembly elections of the French Pacific territory, unofficial
results showed on Tuesday.
The other two major parties in French Polynesia, former President and
long-time ruler Gaston Flosse's pro-French Tahoeraa Huiraatira and
pro-independence Oscar Temaru's Union for Democracy (UPLD), will now be
represented in a lesser proportion, with respectively 20 and 10 MPs in the next
legislative assembly, the Pacnews, a Suva-based regional news agency reported on
Tuesday.
The legislative assembly will hold its inaugural meeting on Feb.21 to elect
its speaker.
After the speaker's election, the parliament has 14 days to reconvene and
elect a president for the French Pacific territory.
French Polynesia's 177,000 registered voters cast their vote on Sunday.
