Bush criticizes Congress in speech on economy

    WASHINGTON, April 29 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday criticized Congress for not acting on his proposals to deal with the rising cost of fuel and other necessities in a speech on U.S. economy.

    "I ask Congress to do its part by sending me sensible and effective bills that I can sign instead of just issuing or sending bills that simply look like political statements," Bush told a press conference in the Rose Garden of the White House.

    Nevertheless, he said he and the Congress "will work to find areas of agreement so that we can deal with the economic pressures that our American taxpayers and American families are feeling."

    The president didn't rule out a summer moratorium on the federal gas tax.

    Bush, speaking during the 44th news conference of his presidency, also noted that it has been more than three decades since the United States built a new refinery.

    WASHINGTON, April 29 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush said Tuesday that the United States was making "good progress" in Afghanistan, despite a weekend Taliban attack on a parade attended by Afghan President Hamid Karzai and international envoys.

Bush still hopeful for Middle East peace deal

    WASHINGTON, April 29 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush said Tuesday he is still hopeful that there will be a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians before his term ends in January 2009.

    "I'm still hopeful we'll get an agreement by the end of my presidency," Bush said at a press conference held at the White House. Full story
