Skating Olympic champion Yang to start torch relay in Hainan

    SANYA, Hainan, May 2 (Xinhua) -- China's skating Olympic champion Yang Yang will be the first torchbearer of the Olympic torch relay in Sanya on Sunday, said officials at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay press conference here Friday.

    Yang, the first Chinese gold medalist in the Winter Olympic Games, won two gold medals in 500m and 1000m short track speed skating at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games to end China's gold drought at winter Olympics.

    Yang won a total of 59 world titles in her career in the World Championships and World Cups. She announced retirement at the age of 30 in August, 2006.

    Pop star Jackie Chan and Pu Huifang, head of Fenghuang Town in Sanya, will be the last torchbearers.

    A total of 208 torchbearers, including officials, businessmen and show-biz figures will run through Sanya.
