HONG KONG, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Chiu Chung-hei, 14, was the youngest among the 120 torchbearers for the Hong Kong leg of the Beijing Olympic torch relay on Friday and Tsang Hin-chi, the 74-year-old business legend, was the eldest.
Timothy Fok, president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, said the torchbearers are from all walks of life in Hong Kong and are representatives of the local society.
Chiu Chung-hei is a student and table tennis player. He was the35th torchbearer, running a section of the relay near Tsing Ma Bridge linking the Hong Kong Island and the Lantau Island.
He once played ping pong with Chinese president Hu Jintao.
"I will try to be a professional sportsman representing Hong Kong in the future," he said in an interview with Xinhua after being named torchbearer.
Tsang, chairman of the Hong Kong-based Gold Lion Holdings and a member of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress, was the50th runner during the torch relay.
Tsang held up his thumb to people standing by the roads while running his part in Sha Tin, near the equestrian venue of the Beijing Olympics in August.
Tsang was known for his zest for sports and had been one of those working hard to promote Chinese sports over the past decades. Having grown up on the mainland and made a fortune in Hong Kong, Tsang donated millions to charities in the mainland.
He has been invited to the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics scheduled for August 8. Tsang said he will attend the ceremony although he was bound to the wheelchair and need help from the others on public occasions.
"Like many other citizens in Hong Kong, I am proud of the torch relay. I was excited when Beijing won the bid to host the Olympics. Our country is becoming stronger and I believe our government will be able to make it successful," he said.
