ROME, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese orchestras performed a landmark concert for Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday at the Paul VI AudienceHall in the Vatican City.

    It was the first time that Chinese orchestras performed in the Vatican.

    In the hour-long concert, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, joined by the Shanghai Opera House Chorus, performed Mozart's "Requiem" and the well-known Chinese folk song Jasmine Flower for the pope and thousands of other guests.

    "In a group of such accomplished artists, we see represented the great cultural and musical tradition of China, and this performance helps us to understand better the history of the Chinese people, their values and their noble aspirations," Pope Benedict said in his remark of thanks.

    He also extended his greetings to "all the people of China as they prepare for the Olympic Games, an event of great importance for the entire human family."

    Conductor Yu Long told reporters after the concert that music is a bridge between cultures and peoples, which can deepen understanding and promote talks between among people.
