JAKARTA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with magnitude of 5.7 rocked Aceh province in northern tip of Sumatra Island in western Indonesia on Tuesday afternoon, but there were no reports of damage or casualties, the local meteorology agency said here.

    The quake struck at 17:29 Jakarta time (1029 GMT) with epicenter at 112 kilometers southwest the provincial capital of Banda Aceh and 68 kilometers under sea bad, an official of the agency Rudy teguh said.

    The intensity of the quake was felt at 2 MMI (modified mercally intensity) at Banda Aceh.

    In 2004, over 170,000 people were dead in the province after a tsunami triggered by a powerful quake devastated coastal areas of the province and others countries in southeast Asia.

    Indonesia is laid at a vulnerable zone, so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates, stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, meet that causes frequent volcanic movements.
