GAZA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Egypt closed on Tuesday its borders with southern Gaza Strip after the Rafah border crossing has been opened for three days, officials in Gaza said.

    Under an agreement between Egypt and Gaza ruling the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Rafah border crossing was opened for three days from Saturday to allow patients and other Palestinians holding foreign nationalities to cross into Egypt.

    The interior ministry of the deposed Hamas government in Gaza announced that it works on a plan to manage Rafah crossing and arrange movement of passengers in case the crossing is reopened.

    In January, thousands of Palestinians from Gaza breached the borders between Gaza and Egypt after Hamas militants blew up the fence. The crossing was closed after Hamas took control of Gaza last June.

    "The aim of this plan is to minimize the suffering of the passengers, especially patients," said a statement sent to reporters by Hamas government.

    A European diplomatic source said earlier this week that the EU would not be at the crossing during its temporary reopening.
