More countries, int'l organizations offer condolences to China over quake

    BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- More countries and international organizations Tuesday sent messages to Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, or in other ways, to express their condolences over the massive earthquake in southwestern China.

    Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the Indian people feel the sorrow experienced by Chinese brothers and sisters, expressing his belief that the Chinese people will overcome the difficulties. Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee repeated his support to China's disaster relief efforts.

    In a statement, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Bolat Nurgaliyev expressed deep condolences and sympathy toward the families of the victims and the people in the quake-hit areas.

    Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon extended his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and expressed his belief that the Chinese people can overcome the disaster in a short time.

    Uzbek President Islam Karimov voiced his deep sorrow and condolences over the huge casualties and property losses in the quake.

    President of Kyrgyzstan Kurmanbek Bakiyev extended sincere sympathy and condolence for the Chinese government and people over the earthquake and wished those injured a quick recovery.

    Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko expressed deep grief over the huge human loss in the deadly quake and extended deep sympathy and condolence to the families of the victims.

    Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko offered deep sympathy for the Chinese people.

    Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Sabah expressed sincere sympathy for the families of the victims and believed that under the leadership of the Chinese government, the Chinese people would overcome the aftermath of the disaster.

    Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ali Babacan extended sincere sympathy and condolence for the Chinese government and people following the quake.

    Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva and Prime Minister Jose Socrates offered their deep condolences and sincere sympathy for the Chinese government and people at the moment of profound grief, adding that Portugal is willing to provide assistance for China's disaster relief work.

    Cyprus President Demetris Christofias expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by the devastating earthquake.

    European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso sent a message of condolences to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao over the deadly earthquake, and expressed his condolences for the victims and the solidarity of the people of Europe with the Chinese people.

    Lesotho's Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili and Foreign Minister Mohlabi Kenneth Tsekoa expressed deep condolences to China over the devastating earthquake that claimed heavy casualties.

    Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca conveyed President Evo Morales' and the Bolivian government's deep sympathy to the Chinese government over the quake.

    Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro also extended his sympathy and condolences to the Chinese people and said his country is willing to offer disaster relief aid to China at any time.

    South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma expressed her hope that the people of the disaster-hit areas to resume their normal life as soon as possible and rebuild their homes and South Africa is willing to offer necessary help.

    On behalf of the Guinean government and its people, Mamady Diare, Guinean ambassador to China, firmly supports China in its efforts to overcome the aftermath of the earthquake.

    On behalf of all members of the UN Security Council, British Ambassador John Sawers, the Security Council's current president, expressed condolences and sympathy to China over the devastating quake which claims heavy casualties and property losses.

    Sawers also highlighted the Chinese government's prompt and effective rescue operations.

    A 7.8-magnitude quake rocked Wenchuan county, 159 km northwest of the southwest Sichuan province's capital of Chengdu, at 14:28 (0628 GMT) Monday, killing thousands of people in eight affected provinces.
