Chinese shares edge down 0.36%, securities stocks buck trend

    BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares were 0.36 percent lower on Friday on heavy selling pressure, but securities stocks rose against the market.

    The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange opened higher and reached 3661.07 points during the day, but went down in corrections and closed at 3,624.23 points, down 13.09 points.

    Another 10 Sichuan-based listed companies released information about the quake influence. Of the 66 Sichuan-based companies that stopped trading after the quake, only Sichuan Minjiang Hydropower Co., which was registered at the epicenter Wenchuan, has not released relevant information.

    Among them, Sichuan Chuantou Energy Stock lost by the daily limit of 10 percent to 26.45 yuan (about 3.78 U.S. dollar), as it said a 95 percent holding subsidiary of the company was severely affected by the quake and could not resume production in the near future.

    Sichuan Jinlu Group calculated that it suffered more than 90 million yuan in direct economic loss. The company shares also declined by 10 percent to 5.85 yuan.

    Bank of Communications (BOCOM) saw its 13.2 billion untradable shares worthy of 129.3 billion yuan come out of lock-up period on Friday, the largest event in May of the kind in released market value.

    BOCOM shares declined 3.07 percent to 9.46 yuan. BOCOM vice president Qian Wenhui reassured investors earlier when publishing the bank's first quarter performance that the shareholders who owned the untradable shares do not have a strong desire to sell their holdings, according to information gathered by the management.

    One fourth of the locked-up shares were held by the state, a large proportion was held by large state-owned enterprises and local companies that have stable connections with the bank, said Qian.

    Despite the slack market, Haitong Securities surged by the daily limit of 10 percent to 56.39 yuan as it announced a dividend plan on Friday, and Changjiang Securities gained 5.76 percent to 29.4 yuan.

    The financial sector shares rose 1.89 percent as a whole. Led by Hunan New Wellful Co. that was up 10 percent to 13.18 yuan, agricultural stocks also surged by 1.3 percent.

    The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 13,314.38 points, down 95.77 points, or 0.71 percent.

    Combined turnover recovered further from Thursday's 125.7 billion yuan to 141.36 billion yuan.
