LIMA, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Some Latin American and European Union (EU) leaders on Friday called for tackling poverty and climate change as they gathered here for a summit.

Peruvian President Alan Garcia, Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa whose country holds the current EU presidency, European Parliament President Hans-Gert Pottering and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso attended the opening session of the 5th Latin American, Caribbean and European Union Summit, which runs through Saturday.

The leaders agreed on the need to address climate change and contribute to the fight against poverty and stressed the importance of a strategic association between the two regions and specifying joint commitments.

"From this meeting, people expect solutions, raising problems and goals more than declarations or ritual meetings," Garcia said.

The leaders discussed other topics, including poverty, inequality, sustainable development, environment and energy, and may also talk about drug trafficking, organized crime and migration.
