BRASILIA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- In early hours of Thursday, the Brazilian soccer club of Fluminense came from behind to defeat the powerhouse of Boca Juniors.
The Argentinean team had won the tournament six times, but this tradition did not intimidate Fluminense in front of their home crowd in the Maracana stadium. Fluminense scored all three of their goals in the second half, wining by a score of 3-1.
Boca Juniors scored first, with their only goal of the game coming off the head of Palermo.
In a timed pass over the head of the Fluminense fullbacks, Palmero received the ball near the end of the field and headed the ball in-between the goalkeeper and the goalpost.
It was the first goal of the game and came in the 12th minute of the second half. After their goal, Boca Juniors seemed to attack with more frequency and determination. However, the goalie for Fluminense, Fernando Henrique, saved the day on various occasions, allowing his team to stay in the game.
Five minutes after Boca Juniors' goal, Fluminense answered with a goal of their own. Washington took a stopped ball penalty kick nearly 26 meters from the goal. Like a marksman, the athlete shot the ball just barely above the heads of the Boca Juniors defensive wall and watched as it sailed freely into the net. The goal came in the 17th minute of the second half.
In the 25th minute, Fluminense took off on a fast break. Dodo passed the ball off to a wide open Dario Conca. The player streaked down the left side of the field. When he ran out of room, he attempted to pass the ball back to Dodo. However, the ball deflected off the feat of Boca Juniors' fullback, Ibarra, and flew into the goal while the goalkeeper was unable to react to the deflected ball.
The goal gave the team a boost of confidence as they could almost taste the victory. In the 47th minute, Fluminense scored one more time. On a poorly passed ball from the Boca Juniors' fullback, Dodo took advantage and stole the ball. Dribbling once to his right, Dodo fired the ball on the ground passed the goalkeeper, making the score 3-1.
With their victory, Fluminense was able to repeat the feat that the 1963 Santos team accomplished when they kicked Boca Juniors out of the Libertadores semifinals.
Fluminense will now face the team from Ecuador, LDU. The first game will take place in Quito, on June 25. The second will take place at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro on July 2.
