Ecuadorian Hugo Chila seeks a pass for Beijing Olympics

    QUITO, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Ecuadorian athlete Hugo Chila will compete Thursday in the Iberoamerican championship of Athletics in Chile with the hope to earn a berth for the Olympic Games of Beijing-2008.

    Chilas' presence at the Olympics is pending because during the past Olympic Festival in Cuenca, Ecuador, he was only able to achieve the mark of 16.66 meters in the triple jump.

    The mark required to earn a berth is 16.8 meters.

    According to Chila, quoted Monday by local press, "The last chance in the Iberoamerican in Chile because during the training Ihave not have difficulties to reach the mark."

    To the moment, Jefferson Perez, Rolando Saquipaz, Andres Chocho,Xavier Moreno, Fausto Quinde, Miriam Ramon, Byron Piedra, FranklinNazareno, Sandra Ruales and Franklin Tenorio form the Ecuadorian athletics team for the Olympics.

    Also, Lorena Benitez (taekwondo), Roberto Ibanez, Carmen Chala and Glenda Miranda (judo), Luis Porozo, Jose Luis Meza and Carlos Gongora (boxing): Yamile Bahamonde (swimming).

    In weightlifitng, Alexandra Escobar and Eduardo Guadamunto; in archery Carmen Malo: in cycling Emilio Falla and in tennis NicolasLapentti.
