Special report: 2008 Olympic Games
BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Five other member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)
pledged on Friday to actively assist China in the security work for the upcoming
Olympic Games.
Security departments of the six SCO members -- China,
Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan -- would increase
cooperation to ensure a successful Games, according to a joint press communique
issued here.
"The Beijing Olympics is a great event not only for
the Chinese people, but also for peoples from the SCO member countries and from
all over the world," the communique said.
"Any actions and activities plotted to disrupt the
Games would not enjoy popular support and would damage the interests of all
peoples around the world," it said.
The six SCO members also vowed to work together to
build lasting regional peace, common prosperity and harmony.
The joint press communique was reached at the
conclusion of a two-day meeting of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure,
which was focused on security at the Beijing Olympic Games.
The SCO, founded in 2001, aims to strengthen mutual
trust and friendship among its members, expand effective cooperation in
politics, economy, trade, science, technology, education, energy, transport and
environment protection, safeguard and guarantee regional peace, security and
stability, and push for the establishment of a democratic, just and rational
international political and economic order.
