KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Xinhua) -- About 50 members of the Malaysian Islamic Consumers Association (PPIM) gathered in front of the United States embassy on Friday to hand over a memorandum protesting the superpower's interference in the country's internal affairs.

The group walked to the embassy after Friday prayers in Kuala Lumpur.

"American interference clearly cannot be accepted by any country over any internal issue and must be condemned," said PPIM secretary-general Ma'amor Osman.

U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey has said that U.S. opposed any politically motivated investigation or prosecution of Malaysian former deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in regard to a sodomy report lodged against him.

Ma'amor handed over the memorandum to an embassy representative who declined to be identified. The embassy was closed for the American Independence Day here on Friday.

The half-hour gathering was peaceful and there was no untoward incident, Cheras police district chief Ahmad Amir Mohd Hashim said.
