Special report: 2008 Olympic Games¡¡
BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Spectators are strongly advised not to drive private cars to Olympic Games venues as there will be no parking for them, said the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau.
The bureau will also ban or control public traffic on 28 roads around the Olympic Green between July 20 and Sept. 20, a bureau spokesman said.
Passes were needed for people living in the areas around the Olympic Green to drive on the roads, and they must also follow the even-odd system based on license plate numbers that will keep vehicles off the road on alternate days.
To compensate motorists for the restrictions, all vehicle owners will be exempted from taxes and road maintenance fees for three months, costing the government 1.3 billion yuan (186 million U.S. dollars).
Spectators were encouraged to use public transport, and they will be able to take buses and subways free in downtown Beijing till 4 a.m. the day after the ticket date.
Beijing spent almost half of its transportation infrastructure budget on its bus system ahead of the Olympics to avoid becoming a giant car park during the event.
The city is gearing up to provide swift transportation for 8 million athletes, media people and spectators from around the world during the Games.
