YANGON, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar believes that the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is bound to become the most ever splendid and successful one in the Olympic history, a Myanmar Olympic official told Xinhua Thursday.

The world has witnessed the full preparation of China to hold a high-level Beijing Olympic Games and it has total reason to believe that the Olympic Games could score full success, said U Khin Maung Lwin, who is Joint Secretary-General of the Myanmar Olympic Committee.

"As a friendly neighbor of China, we Myanmar people take pride for China. As Asian people, we also feel honored for Asia to be able to hold the Olympic Games successfully," he said.

He disclosed that there will be six Myanmar athletes participating in such events as track and field, swimming, archery, rowing and canoeing/kayat, adding that the athletes are concentrating on training.

He stressed that the athletes place emphasis on the participation, saying that they will get experiences through the event and it boosts friendship and at the same time Myanmar athletes strive to create their best results.

He also briefed that after Myanmar gained independence in 1948,Myanmar athletes joined Olympic Games in every edition except the 21st in 1976.

Myanmar weightlifter Aung Kyi once broke the world record of the flyweight-class of weightlifting in 1972 Olympic Games, he said, adding that sports in Myanmar made progress continuously.

In the 24th Southeast Asian Games held in Bangkok in December 2007, Myanmar won 87 medals, of which 14 were gold medals, 26 silver medals and 47 bronze medals.
