BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- After the Olympic flame passed southwestern Sichuan Province and arrived in the capital, the Beijing torch relay entered second day here on Thursday.
On the second of its three-day relay in Beijing, the torch is traveling through Yanqing, Changping, Huairou, Miyun, Pinggu, Shunyi, Tongzhou, Dongcheng districts.
The torch relay started from the Badaling Section of the Great Wall, passing Zhenggezhuang Village, China (Huairou) Movie & TV Industry Zone, Miyun Reservoir, Pinggu Theater and the Tongzhou Canal, and will end at the Ditan Park.
Below are some introductions of the scenic spots along the route:
Badaling Section of the Great Wall: Located more than 70 km north of downtown Beijing, it is the most well-preserved part of the Great Wall, built during the Ming Dynasty. This section, with an average altitude of more than 1,000 meters, is the outpost of the Juyongguan Pass, a military stronghold on the Great Wall.
China (Huairou) Movie & TV Industry Zone: A state-level movie and television production base, with the digital film production base of China Film Group as the core business.
Miyun Reservoir: Located 100 km northeast of downtown Beijing, it is a mountain valley reservoir. Two main rivers, the Chaohe and Baihe rivers flow into this largest reservoir in Beijing area. The reservoir is initially built for flood control, irrigation and fishery, but it has become more important as a main drinking water source for Beijing area.
Tongzhou Canal: It is part of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the longest ancient canal or artificial water way in the world connecting the cities of Beijing, Tianjin and Hangzhou, and the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
Ditan Park: Built in 1530 during the Ming Dynasty, it was used as a place where Emperors performed sacrifices to the gods for good harvests, auspicious weather and a stable nation. Ditan, the Temple of Earth, complements the Temple of Heaven in the south of Beijing.
