BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here Thursday with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is here to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games and other activities.
Calling his Brazilian counterpart an old friend of
the Chinese people, Hu extended a warm welcome on behalf of the Chinese
government and people.
"Your arrival itself is a strong support to the
Beijing Olympic Games," Hu told the guest.
He said that he is ready to take the opportunity to
exchange views with President Lula on bilateral ties and other issues of common
concern.
In response, the Brazilian president expressed his
belief that China would host an excellent Olympic Games. China's success would
encourage Brazil in its bid to host the 2016 Olympics, he added.
More than 80 heads of state and government and royals
are expected to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, scheduled
for Friday evening in the National Stadium, better known as the Bird's Nest, in
