BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Friday night hailed that tonight all the people have one world, one dream.

"For a long time, China has dreamed of opening its doors and inviting the world's athletes to Beijing for the Olympic Games. Tonight that dreams comes true. Congratulations, Beijing!" said Rogge at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games.

"You have chosen the theme of these Games 'One World, One Dream'," said the president:"That is what we are tonight".

As one world, people are grieved with the Chinese people over the tragic earthquake in Sichuan Province, said Rogge. People were also moved by the great courage and solidarity of the Chinese people, he added.

"As one dream, may these Olympic Games bring you joy, hope and pride," said Rogge.

"Please compete in the spirit of the Olympic values: excellence, friendship and respect," Rogge asked the competing athletes.

He also urged the athletes, as role models for the world's youth, to compete fairly and reject doping and cheating. "Make us proud of your achievements and your conduct," he said.

Rogge also offered warm thanks to the Beijing Organizing Committee for its tireless work and to the thousands of Chinese volunteers.

"Beijing, you are a host to the present and a gateway to the future!" the IOC president said.
