Chinese premier meets former German chancellor Schroeder

    BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Sunday with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder who attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games.

    Shroeder said the Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony was perfect and displayed the profound culture of China, which the Chinese people should certainly be proud of.

    He said the motto of the Beijing Olympic Games, "One World, One Dream", agreed with the prospect of China's development.

    Wen, who had met with Schroeder for three times since the latter retired, said Schroeder was an old friend of the Chinese people.

    He said he appreciated the article written by Schroeder in July which had an big impact in China, Germany and the world, and he believed the article showed the foresight and wisdom of a statesman and his thoughtful vision of China-Germany ties.

    On bilateral relations, Wen said the two countries have made remarkable achievements on economic and trade cooperation, technology transfer, law enforcement dialogues and cultural exchanges.

    "China is ready to work together with Germany, based on the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits, to raise level of bilateral partnership," said Wen.

    Shroeder said Germany and China shared extensive common interests and he was optimistic about the future of Germany-China ties.

    He added that he would continue to make contribution to the development of Germany-China relations.
