KATHMANDU, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- More than 5,000 people displaced by last
week's Saptakoshi flood, are suffering from various health related problems, and
two of them died, local leading news websiteNepalnews.com reported on Thursday.
Three Village Development Committees (VDCs) were in full inundation and
four other VDCs partially submerged in Sunsari district bordering India, some
220 km southeast of capital Kathmandu, after the embankment of the Saptakoshi
River suddenly broke down on Aug. 18.
The displaced people are taking shelter at 23 camps in Sunsari district and
suffering mainly from pneumonia and high fever.
Health workers involved in treating the sick said that at least24 persons
are in critical condition in hospitals.
A medical team from military hospital is also treating the sick and the
injured in 23 government camps in the district.
According to doctors involved in treating the patients, lack of safe
drinking water, sanitation and bedding in the camps is causing the number of
sick inside these camps to increase.
