ISLAMABAD, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Election Commission of
Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday evening announced the official result of the
presidential election and declared People's Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali
Zardari as the new president.

Benazir Bhutto, secured 481 votes from the total number of 702 votes of the
electoral college consisting of two houses of the parliament and four provincial
assemblies.

According
to the constitution, the candidate who has simple majority of the 702 votes will
be the next president of the country.
Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui, who was fielded by Pakistan
Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), bagged 153 votes while Senator Mushahid Hussain, a
candidate from the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), got 44 votes.
The ECP congratulated Zadari on his winning the presidential election.

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Former Pakistani Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday accepted his party's defeat in the
presidential election, but urged the new president to be neutral.
Sharif, also chief of the Pakistan Muslim
League-Nawaz (PML-N), made the remarks shortly after Pakistan People's Party
(PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari won the presidential election. Full story

(PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday won majority in the voting for
presidential election in the southwestern Pakistan province, according to an
unofficial result.

Bhutto, won the voting in the provincial assembly of Balochistan as counting in
the national parliament and other assemblies are continuing, local TV reported.

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistani legislators
started to vote for the next president on Saturday to fill the slot left by
former President Pervez Musharraf.
The polling will continue from 10 a.m. (1600 GMT) till 3
p.m. (2100 GMT) without any break at a joint session of National Assembly and
Senate in Islamabad and the four provincial assemblies. Full story
