CAIRO, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a massive rockslide Saturday in the Egyptian capital of Cairo has climbed to 31, a medical source said on Sunday.

At least 48 people were injured in the incident and some of them are still in hospital for treatment, said the medical source on condition of anonymity.

On Saturday morning, the massive landslide in El-Deweiqa area, close to the eastern Cairo suburb of Nasr City, leveled a number of shanties in the slum area.

Huge boulders, estimated to weigh between 60 and 70 tons, buried about 30 houses at the foot of the Muqattam hill.

Rescue teams on the spot are still working hard to search for survivors of the landslide.

Security officials said that the casualties are expected to rise since an unknown number of people are estimated buried in the debris, and the neighboring areas have been evacuated in fear of more landslides. ¡¡
