RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Despite not having practiced as a team
since their gold medal performance in Beijing, on Sunday the Brazilian women's
volleyball team won the Final Four tournament in Fortaleza, Brazil.
With their victory, the team says goodbye to one of their stars, Fofao. The
team defeated the Dominican Republic in the championship game by a score of 3-0.
The Brazilians won with scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-18.
Sunday's game was the 340th match played by Fofao for the national team. It
was also the setter's last. The 38-year-old veteran has decided to retire from
the sport despite her teammate's wishes and her coach's pleas for her to stay.
Even before the game ended on Sunday, in the third set, Roberto was visibly
emotional as he watched Fofao lead her team to victory. After the game, Fofao
broke down into tears as the crowd chanted, "Stay Fofao, stay".
"I give God all the thanks for giving me good health to arrive where I am
at today. I am really going to miss everyone. I am glad that I was able to seal
my career here on Brazilian soil in front of a Brazilian crowd...that is
something I will never forget," said Fofao.
Fofao's career was highlighted with their victory over the American's in
the championship game of the Olympics. Along with her gold medal, she has two
bronze Olympic medals.
